Canal du midi by bike

When you have the chance to spend a holiday in Languedoc, you should take the opportunity to cycle through the Canal du Midi. The cottages in the Puychen area are very close to the canal: it is ideal for running or for pedaling. On this beautiful day in September, we wanted to reach the Mediterranean Sea from Saint-Nazaire’s Aude. September is really the perfect month to visit us.

We passed by Le Somail and its restaurants bordering the Canal du Midi, to take the direction of Béziers. From our bikes we had plenty of time to admire the bridges over the rivers, the locks and the vines that were everywhere around. from U.S.

To reach Narbonnethen the island of Sainte-Lucie we left the Canal du Midi for the junction canal then the Canal de la Robine which goes to the sea. This is the whole history of the Narbonnaisethat we follow. To cross the Aude river, we had to take an incredible very old and very rusty railway bridge. This is the place where the two canals mix their waters with the river that gave the department its name.

The towpath is really very pleasant up to Narbonne. We took a very pleasant break there on the magnificent Town Hall square. We cross the city then join the lock of Mandirac with its rice fields before finding ourselves in the middle of the ponds. A somewhat surreal landscape with many birds on the Ayrolle pond. We meet many cyclists because the weather is wonderful. We head to the Mediterranean Sea for lunch and a swim. It feels like summer.

But time flies too quickly. We already have to think about going home. We will never forget this 90 kilometer outing along the Canal du Midi by bike in the south of France.
